Time to Fly Kites

Well, after so many weeks of activities in the lab, the committee members of Science and maths society decided to go fly kites. Some of us managed to fly the kites (yours truly) where else some fail over and over again. This was what we did:

Everyone were preparing themselves to 'fly kites'

Some were admiring the kites." I wonder what they were looking at?"

Here's an example of those who got the kite going

Here's another example.

N this!! A 'perfect example' of kite flying. DO NOT FOLLOW THE ABOVE.

A success!! After running for about 400m, it works

Another success!! (but the person in the picture don't seem to realize it)

See the guy above ^^^^ His name is Ben. Our club's president. Erm..... He is very very determined in this fly kite thing. U will understand why as you continue reading.

Its Ben again.

See? He never stops trying. I think he is trying to let the rest of us noe not to mess with him when he is on to something.

The Ultimate Challenge

Science and Maths society, 'kelab rekacipta' and 'kelab keusahawanan' decided to make a race for all their members. Even though the commitee members did not participate in the race, but we enjoy organizing it.(actually enjoy seeing the members make a fool out of themselves-JUST KIDDING) I am sure I am not the only one who think so rite? The race was quite challenging actually, especially the 'the water that non stop peeing' or something like that station. The questions were easy, they just couldn't understand the hidden messages behind it. Example: bicycle, bicycle, bicycle = tricycle. Its not that difficult rite?
Anyways, after the race, ms. Ong gave the winner RM10 as promised . The winner was kwok wings group. The money entered our own pockets( science and maths) if you noticed because kwok wing belong to the science and maths society. Good Job!!!!!!! For those who didnt win, don't be sad. You did a good job, try harder next time :]

Sry for not including pictures in this post. Will put some in the next one hopefully.

Jigsaw Puzzle

We wanted to do the chemical garden today, but we could not find Mr. Kalarajan to get the ingredients. A lot of members also turned up without empty jam jars. So, instead of just sitting down waiting for time to fly by, we decided to fix jigsaw puzzles. Sad to say that the quality of the puzzles are quite low and highly inaccurate! We had also decided the punishments for finishing the second last and last.
The punishments for finishing the last two:

Reminder for 6 May 2009

To all Science and Maths Society members, please remember to bring a glass container, about the size of a jam jar, next week. If possible, bring the lid as well. We'll be making a chemical garden and growing crystals. Maybe we'll even grow kryptonite. Who knows...

RACE DAY!!!! Vroom Vroom...

Finally, RACE DAY. everyone is so pumped up. There were 4 groups only competing with each another. The groups were my group( Joon Keet ), Kwok Wing's Group, the innovative Form 1 Group who planned to use water in the first place, and Azriel's Group. Things were heating up until it started to get windy. The race was held at tapak perhimpunan. Even though it was windy, things went well. It was a 'tight' race. Three rounds were held at the cement floor where else another two were held on the stage(tiles). The victorious team was the form 1 team. Hooray n congrats to them!!!!! Our future scientists.

Raceday Videos

Let's take a look at the contenders for the title of "Fastest Balloon Car"!

And this was the winner for the day. This car was created by the group Apple 1. Maybe someday they'll be making racecars for F1, huh?

This is another car, less successful, but still works all the same. And, with the coloured decorations at the side, it's probably the only one with extra design.

Wow. Take a look at the incredible distance traveled by these cars. Ah well, at least they tried...

And here we have the video of the winning group for the "fastest car" category. Watch the video and see if you can tell who's the winner. Just a lucky guess.

Below are the results for distance traveled by the individual cars.

Though the results were rather underwhelming, each of the members put in a lot of effort to make their cars. And, at least, they learnt the value of learning from failure. Science and Maths Society, we salute you!

Preparation for Race Day!

This week we are making cars out of recyclable materials such as used bottle caps and so on. The members are divided into 5-6 groups. They are expected to complete their cars, which are powered by balloons, by race day which is next week. Some groups looks promising to succeed, however some groups are just playing around. Which ever way, I'm sure they all had some fun at the end of the day. A group even tried to do something extraordinary. Instead of using air as people would, they are trying a method which uses water to propel their car forward. Pictures and 2 videos is provided below:

Although the liquid propellant used in the above video was water instead of air, it still moved remarkably fast. Hmm...an idea for another science project perhaps?

The car in the above video did some impressive drifting but moved only about 45 cm. Hope they can do better on race day!

Coke & Mentos!

Today we experimented with Coke and Mentos. It turns out that we need Diet Coke a.k.a. Coca-Cola Light and it needs to be warm. Well, the experiment was a little disappointing as the "geyser" did not fly up as high as was shown in the videos. But it's a learning experience and we hope to do better next year. Pictures and videos taken are below:
